Deye hybrid inverters and Easyway UNIV batteries are often installed together in Austria. For the system to run stably, three things must match: the voltage window, the communication between the battery management system (BMS) and the inverter, and the settings in the Deye menu. This article summarises what the manufacturer documents say and what you should check before commissioning.
First of all: Involtis CS Photovoltaics GmbH is the general importer of Easyway Energy for Austria and a Deye specialist. We supply specialist businesses only. We confirm a specific combination of inverter, battery and firmware on a project basis – please ask the Involtis service before ordering.
Step 1: Low voltage or high voltage – the system voltage must match
For its three-phase hybrid units, Deye clearly distinguishes between low voltage (48 V) and high voltage. Easyway offers its own UNIV batteries for both worlds. Mixing is not possible.
| System | Deye inverter (according to datasheet) | Deye battery voltage range | Easyway battery (according to datasheet) | Battery voltage range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low voltage (48 V) | SUN-6/10/12/15/20K-SG05LP3-EU-SM2 | 40–60 V | UNIV-16kWh(II), UNIV-16kWh(WP) | 44.8–57.6 V (51.2 V nominal) |
| High voltage | SUN-5…25K-SG01HP3-EU-AM2 | 160–700 V | UNIV-16kWh(H) | depending on the number of modules, e.g. UNIV-16kWh(H) with 3 modules 134.4–172.8 V |
| High voltage | SUN-29.9…50K-SG01HP3-EU-BM3/BM4 | 160–800 V | as above | as above |
With low voltage, the entire UNIV voltage window lies within the Deye range. With high voltage, the window depends on the number of modules. According to the datasheet, for example, UNIV-16kWh(H) with 3 modules is at 134.4–172.8 V. The lower limit is therefore below the 160 V specified by Deye. With very large two-tower UNIV-16kWh(H) configurations, on the other hand, the upper limit is above 700 V or 800 V. Please have Involtis confirm the permissible minimum and maximum number of modules for your inverter before the quotation.
On availability: we stock Deye low-voltage units; high-voltage systems are available on request.
Step 2: What is actually documented on compatibility
For installers it is important to know what is documented in the manufacturer documents. As of 15.10.2026:
- Easyway compatibility list high voltage: Deye is marked as an inverter brand for UNIV-16kWh(H). The list does not name individual Deye models.
- Easyway compatibility list low voltage: The Deye row lists the models SUN-3.6K-SG03LP1-EU and SUN-10/12K-SG04LP3-EU. All UNIV low-voltage types are ticked, including UNIV-16kWh(II).
- Easyway datasheet UNIV-16kWh(II)/(WP): Under “Compatible Inverters”, Deye is named as a brand without model details.
In practice this means: Deye hybrid inverters and Easyway UNIV batteries are in reliable use in many of our systems. We confirm the right combination on a project basis via Involtis support (Easyway general importer). Record this confirmation with model and firmware in the system documentation.
Step 3: Connect the BMS communication correctly
According to the datasheet, the Deye inverter charges lithium batteries with “self-adaptation to BMS”. It therefore adopts the charge and discharge limits reported by the battery BMS. For this, communication must be in place:
- Deye side: RJ45 port “BMS 485/CAN”. According to the manual (Appendix I, p. 51): pin 4 = CAN-H, pin 5 = CAN-L, pin 1/8 = RS485-B, pin 2/7 = RS485-A.
- Easyway side (UNIV-14.3/16kWh(II), manual A2-EN): pin 4 = CAN-H, pin 5 = CAN-L, pin 1/8 = RS485-B, pin 2/7 = RS485-A, pin 3/6 = GND. Easyway states: with identical pin assignment, a normal network cable is sufficient. With a different assignment, a dedicated cable is needed, otherwise the inverter will not detect the battery.
- Several batteries: According to the Easyway manual, the inverter connects via CAN to the master battery. The other batteries are connected to each other via RS485 (RS485A → RS485B).
- Protocol on the battery: On the display of the UNIV-16kWh(II), the protocol can be changed, among others to “PN_GDLT: Pylon”, Growatt, Victron, SMA and Solis. According to the manual, RS485 detects the protocol automatically.
- Deye installation detail: According to the manual, the BMS communication cable is wound four times around the supplied ferrite ring, the battery cable twice (p. 11).
Step 4: Settings in the Deye “Battery Setting” menu
The Deye manual (SUN-3…12K-SG05LP3-EU-SM2, chap. 5.6, pp. 36–37) describes the relevant points:
- Batt Mode = Lithium: for BMS-managed lithium batteries.
- Batt Capacity and Max A Charge/Discharge: For lithium, Deye recommends “Ah capacity × 50 %” as charge and discharge current. For a UNIV-16kWh(II) (314 Ah) this is 157 A. The value corresponds to the recommended current in the Easyway datasheet. The inverter’s limit remains, e.g. max. 240 A for the 12 kW unit.
- Lithium Mode: This is the BMS protocol number. Please obtain the appropriate value for Easyway from Involtis support. Do not try out values.
- Shutdown / Low Batt / Restart: Here you set the SOC thresholds for shutdown, warning and restart.
- BMS_Err_Stop (Advanced Function, p. 42): If the function is active, the inverter stops when communication with the BMS is lost and reports an error (F58, see Deye error codes).
You can see whether communication is working in the Li-BMS menu. There the inverter displays the values reported by the BMS, such as voltage, current, temperature, SOC and charge limits (p. 34).
Checklist before commissioning
- Note the exact type designations, incl. suffix (-EU-SM2, -EU-AM2 …), plus the firmware versions (Deye: Device Info menu).
- Check the system voltage: low voltage to low voltage, high voltage to high voltage. For high voltage, compare the number of modules with the Deye voltage range.
- Have compatibility confirmed in writing (Involtis) and file it in the system documentation.
- Check the communication cable against both pin assignments and set the battery protocol.
- DC protection: According to the Deye manual (chap. 3.4, p. 10), a separate DC overcurrent protection or disconnecting device is required between battery and inverter.
- Installation location: According to the datasheet, UNIV low-voltage batteries are IP20 and designed for indoor use (5–95 % rel. humidity, non-condensing, charging at 10–55 °C).
- Enter the battery parameters on the Deye and check the values in the Li-BMS menu.
- Grid operator: A battery is a notifiable change. More on this in Retrofitting AC storage.
